The Beginning: A Request
It started like any other Tuesday. A client from Abuja contacted me. She needed her resume revamped. This was not unusual. I have done this kind of work times before. We talked about what she wanted to achieve her experience and what she wanted to highlight in her resume. I got to work on her resume.
What really caught my attention was that she did not try to negotiate the price without knowing what she was getting. She asked me questions about the work understood the value of my service and we agreed on the terms.
I did the work. Delivered it to her. She looked at the work I did. Then paid me a few days later.. Before she paid me she started using the resume I made for her. She believed in the quality of my work. She did not wait to get a receipt before she started using her resume.
The Unexpected Opportunity
A days later I was looking at job postings and I saw something that caught my eye. It was a job posting that said "ABUJA RESIDENTS "
The requirements for the job matched her profile perfectly. So I decided to apply for the job on her behalf. I did not ask her if I could do this. I just submitted her resume. Went about my day. It only took me five minutes to do this.
I did not think much about what I had done. To be honest I forgot that I had applied for the job on her behalf.
The Call That Changed Everything
Days later my phone rang.
She told me that she got an email inviting her for an interview. She was surprised because she did not apply for the job. She asked me how the company got her resume.
I told her what I had done. She was surprised and then thankful. She was calm and understanding about the situation.
She prepared for the interview. She went for the interview. Did a great job.
She got the job. It was a job with a good salary and benefits. This was the kind of job that could change her life.
We have never met in person.. We are connected because of her resume and my decision to help her.
Why Her? Why Go That Extra Mile?
People ask me why I applied for the job on her behalf without asking her. My answer is simple. She deserved it because of the kind of person she's
She did not try to negotiate the price without knowing what she was getting. She respected my work and the price I charged.
She was calm and understanding. When she delayed paying me she communicated with me in a respectful manner.
She was thankful. She said thank you. She meant it. This kind of attitude matters.
In a world where people can be selfish and only care about what they can get she stood out. When you stand out for the reasons people remember you. They help you even when you do not know it.
The Deeper Lessons
This story is not about a resume or a job. It is about how the world works when we do things the way:
1. Help Can Come From Anyone Anywhere
Your next big opportunity might come from someone you do not know. It might come from a connection you made a time ago. It might come from a favor someone does for you without you asking. Always be open to things. Always be humble.
2. Be Nice to All. Respect All
You never know who is watching you. You never know who is on your side. The person you ignore today might be the one who can help you tomorrow. The way you treat people is important.
3. Pay for Service As Soon As Possible
Life can be complicated.. Paying for services on time is not just about the transaction. It is a sign of respect. It says that you value the persons time. It says that you are professional. This kind of behavior can take you far.
4. Trust God
Not everything makes sense at the time it happens. The timing might be wrong. Things might be delayed.. There is a plan, for everything. Every day is a gift. Sometimes we just have to look to see it.
Today she is doing well in her job. I am reminded why my work is important.. I hope that you are reading this and thinking about how you interact with people. How you treat them. How you live your life.
The resume was a document. The job was a job.. The trust, kindness and respect we showed each other? That is what made the difference.
What is your story of help? Share it with me. I would love to hear how kindness has shown up in your life.
